Current Geoengineering Programs
If you don't know what Geoengineering is, the following info-graphics depict proposed geoengineering techniques which could be used to slow global warming.

The World of Geoengineering: A Half-Century of Earth System Experimentation
ETC Group publishes a world map of geoengineering programs — the large-scale manipulation of earth or climate systems. While there is no complete record of the scores of weather and climate control projects in dozens of countries, this map is the first attempt to document the expanding scope of research and experimentation. Almost 300 geoengineering projects/experiments are represented on the map belonging to 10 different types of climate-altering technologies.
“Accidental Geoengineering” with Ship Tracks and Contrails
“The emissions and the climate change that we’re causing with that is already a massive experiment on our world that we don’t really know the outcome of. So I don’t think we should start another set of experiments and go into geoengineering. I think we should get our act together and reduce our emissions.”
U.N. Assistant Secretary-General Janos Pasztor

David Keith's StratoCruiser Geoengineering SRM Field Test
Sometime next year (Fall 2018), Harvard professors David Keith and Frank Keutsch hope to launch a high-altitude balloon, tethered to a gondola equipped with propellers and sensors, from a site in Tucson, Arizona. After initial engineering tests, the “StratoCruiser” would spray a fine mist of materials such as sulfur dioxide, alumina, or calcium carbonate into the stratosphere. The sensors would then measure the reflectivity of the particles, the degree to which they disperse or coalesce, and the way they interact with other compounds in the atmosphere.
Bill Gates Funds Geoengineering Studies - FICER
Grants for (geoengineering programs) research are provided to the University of Calgary from gifts made by Mr. Bill Gates from his personal funds. The activities of the Fund for Innovative Climate and Energy Research fall outside the scope of activities of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. FICER is not a Foundation project and has no relationship with it.The fund has supported research in a wide range of areas. Some examples include:
- understanding carbon dioxide emissions associated with international trade in goods and services;
- developing technologies to capture carbon dioxide out of the air; and
- climate modeling to understand possible environmental consequences of solar radiation management

Geoengineering Programs: Marine Cloud Brightening (MCB), Cloud Albedo ModificationThe Silver Lining Project geoengineering program is a not-for-profit international scientific research collaboration to study the effects of particles (aerosols) on clouds, and the influence of these cloud effects on climate systems.
The Haida Salmon Restoration Project: Dumping iron in the ocean to save fish, capture carbon
Geoengineering Programs: Ocean Iron FertilizationIn mid-october 2012 ETC Group, working with partners, uncovered a large-scale unauthorised geoengineering scheme that had been carried out in July 300 km off the west coast of Canada, close to the islands of Haida Gwaii.
The Stratoshield “Hose to the Sky” Could Reverse Global Warming
Geoengineering Programs: Solar Radiation Management (SRM) Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI)We’ve been working on some ideas related to climate change, as a kind of backup plan in case human effort to curb emissions don’t succeed fast enough to prevent devastating ecological damage. One of the ideas that has captured our imagination is replicating the way volcanoes have at times brought down the temperature of the planet by erupting sulfur dioxide particles up into the stratosphere. We’ve invented a “hose to the sky” we call the StratoShield, which is a comparatively cost effective way to do this.
Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering (SPICE)
Geoengineering Programs: Solar Radiation Management (SRM) Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI)The project had attracted a forceful protest campaign from NGOs such as Friends of the Earth and ETC group. A petition signed by more than 50 organisations was handed in the same day as the decision to pause the project was announced by the EPSRC. They objected to the project in part because they feared that a "plan B" approach of engineering the climate will offer politicians an excuse for not taking tough decisions on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fules such as oil, coal and gas. | Link
